1. What is WaveSync?

  • WaveSync is a software-based "sync server" and accelerator for handheld computing devices that supports multiple users synchronizing simultaneously with an enterprise (intranet/extranet) or Internet server. WaveSync operates efficiently over all communication media, and syncs Palm Computing Platform clients up to five times faster than Palm's HotSync. WaveSync also includes a robust network management tool, allowing IT managers to effectively configure and monitor the synchronization activities of large or small populations of handheld clients.

2. Who is WaveSync for?

  • Any group or enterprise that needs scalable, server-based multi-user data sync for handheld devices based on the Palm Computing Platform. Applications include data collection, order entry, inventory systems, field service, and many more.

3. How is WaveSync different from other synchronization servers?

  • WaveSync is the most general synchronization solution, supporting all applications ("conduits" in Palm terminology) that comply with Palm's Conduit SDK API (Application Programming Interface). That means that any application/conduit that works with Palm can work with WaveSync with little or no modification (it just can't presume a single-user environment). Unlike other multi-user synchronization products, WaveSync is also a sync accelerator, running up to five times faster than HotSync. Another advantage is that WaveSync supports synchronization of applications and databases from multiple vendors in a single sync session (like HotSync) rather than requiring multiple sync sessions.

4. How fast is synchronization using WaveSync?

  • WaveSync is up to five times faster than Palm's HotSync, depending upon the media type. In the cradle, WaveSync is approximately the same speed as HotSync. However, over links with high latency such as the Internet and wireless networks (e.g. CDPD, GSM, CDMA), WaveSync is typically five times faster than HotSync.

5. How many devices can WaveSync support simultaneously?

  • WaveSync's scaleability is limited only by the network and server hardware being used.

6. What kind of user management capabilities are offered with WaveSync?

  • WaveSync's extensive administration features include:
    - Selectable mapping of host conduits and host databases to client applications
    - Sync specifications selectable from client or host
    - Seamless integration with Windows NT user administration
    - Definition of nested groups of users and sync specifications
    - Assignability of individuals or groups of sync specifications to individuals or groups of users
    - Real-time monitor and display of device population sync status
    - Persistent client application install - automatic reinstallation of client applications
    - Automatic update of client application versions
    - Reload of empty handhelds without server-side intervention
    - Selectable sync hosts - pick from a list of configured servers
    - and many more...

7. With what applications/databases does WaveSync work?

  • Any application/database that complies with Palm's HotSync API can work with WaveSync with little or no modification. Palm's built-in applications work with WaveSync, but at much higher sync speeds.

8. With WaveSync, will I be able to share databases with other people?

  • Yes, when multi-user conduits are available. We currently support Pendragon Software products, with conduits for Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, and others shortly.

9. With WaveSync, will I be able to sync over wireless links and over the Internet?

  • Yes, at speeds of up to five times that of HotSync.

10. Which Palm Computing Platform handhelds does WaveSync support?

  • PalmPilot Professional, Palm III, Palm IIIx, Palm V, Palm VII (cradle sync), and future devices with PalmOS 3.0 or later.

11. Can I use WaveSync with Palm Computing Platform based products sold by IBM, Symbol and Qualcomm?

  • Yes.

12. Does WaveSync work with Microsoft Windows CE based devices?

  • Various PDA platforms including Windows CE will be supported in subsequent releases of WaveSync.

13. Does WaveSync work on NT and Unix servers? Windows 9x desktops?

  • WaveSync Server currently runs under Windows NT. However, WaveSync was developed with portability in mind and a Unix port is underway.
  • WaveSync's Desktop Proxy runs on Windows 9x as well as NT.

14. What are the minimum system requirements necessary to run WaveSync?

  • Server: Any x86 Windows NT 4.0 platform with NT service pack 3 or higher. RAM requirements depend on user load; a minimal configuration is 64 MB. A Pentium class CPU is required.
  • Desktop Proxy: Any x86 platform with Windows 95/98 or Windows NT 4.0 with at least one serial port and a network connection. The proxy can run on the same machine as the server if desired.
  • Manager: Any x86 Windows NT 4.0 platform with NT service pack 3 or higher.
  • Handheld Client: Any PalmOS 2.0 (with NetLib) or PalmOS 3.0 (and up) device including PalmPilot Professional, Palm III, Palm IIIx, Palm V, and Palm VII (cradle sync, not wireless).

15. How much memory does WaveSync take up on the handheld?

  • Approximately 64 KB.

16. What security features are built into WaveSync?

  • WaveSync Server currently uses the built-in Windows NT user authentication mechanism. WaveSync user privileges are based directly on the NT user security model.

17. Can WaveSync work in the presence of firewalls?

  • Yes, easily. All communication is managed on very small number (3 if you want Palm Desktop notification, 1 otherwise) of TCP ports to a single IP address, minimizing the number of ports needed to pass the firewall.

18. Can I synchronize with both my home computer and office server?

  • Yes. However, if your home computer is not linked into your office network, you will need to use HotSync for that sync session. WaveSync is designed to co-exist with HotSync, requiring very little effort.

19. Will WaveSync work with network managers such as Tivoli and Unicenter?

  • These network managers will be supported in future releases of WaveSync.

20. Will WaveSync be able to incorporate users from an LDAP directory?

  • User authentication via LDAP directories will be supported in future releases of WaveSync.

22. How much does WaveSync cost?

  • Pricing is tiered based on the number of user seats per server. An economical 3-user developer/small-group license is also available. Please contact sales@waveware.net for detailed pricing information.

23. When will WaveSync be available?

  • WaveSync 1.5 is currently shipping.

24. Where can I obtain a copy of WaveSync?

  • WaveSync is available direct from WaveWare Communications, and through select resellers and system integrators. Please contact WaveWare sales at sales@waveware.net for ordering information.
